April 18, 2007 —Now we have a ceiling, too
"" When I arrived today, I saw that they were almost done with the first floor framing.
I went up on the bank behind the barn for a better view. As you can see, the rafters on the first floor are almost complete.
The void-form came and they are ready to pour the guest cottage slab. We are waiting for the inspector to sign off on the preparation so we can call for the pour. His car is the little white one by the porta-potty.
Here is another view of the barn from the back.
This is one of the framer's dogs. I think his name is Booker. He likes to pose looking profound. The other framer has a white bulldog bitch named Sugar, and she is a really sweet dog. However, she is shy and much harder to photograph.
Here are some glue-lam beams to be used in the barn roof. I later learned that the short one on top was delivered by mistake and we are awaiting the main beam.

Looking down at the pond from an area that will be at the corner of the house. The tan stuff on the ground is chips the tree trimmers left from pruning the bay tree. I wanted them to put the chips down the hill by the pond, but I wasn't able to be at the site when they came, so it was a done deal by the time I got there.

The ugly orange fence is to let the workers know that that area is off limits. Out of the photo to the left, there are some very cool rocks with lots of lichen on them. We don't want anyone tramping through that area or throwing garbage in it. When the grading contactor for the dam was here, we had them fence it off too; but they took machinery through to rip-rap the gully and caused some damage. Kai Clark, our superintendant, won't let that happen again.

This is a shot going down the road to the pond from the house level of the site. It is just so pretty this time of year.

Back at the buildings, the two framers get cracking on the next floor right after lunch.

On the pile of rocks on the left, you can see the inspector who has gone up there for better cell reception. Luckily, my cell reception is fine all over the house level of the site. He signed off on the forms.

In the foreground you can see a piece of equipment. This is a concrete pump used to pump the concrete off the trucks to wherever the concrete workers want it.

Although I had an appointment to go to in Berkeley, I waited as long as I could in hopes of seeing part of the guest cottage pour, but before it was time for me to go, the guy hauling the pump left, telling me the pour for that day had been cancelled.

FYI, the finisher on the barn slab was a woman.
