August 1 , 2008—The dog days of summer

I am totally in love with the way the courtyard looks so I have taken many, many pictures of it. Here are a few of the best ones.

This one is taken from the east wall by the front gate looking toward the living room.

This one is taken from the middle of the east wall looking toward the living room again. Notice that the two pieces of the beam which were missing on Wednesday are now installed in the corner by the front door.

No, they did not miraculously arrive from New Mexico. What we did, is cut up the rest of the gate post that did not get used for the mantle, and made that into beams. Getting those gate posts was a huge mistake, but they sure have come in handy in other ways.

Here is a better shot of the beams in place. We are still missing the column which is being substituted for by a plain post, but Kai assures me that the real post can be installed with no problem even after the roof is on.
Here is one last shot down the walkway from the front door toward the kitchen showing the pass-through window and vegetable cooler.
I tried to get photos of the latilla shades from inside, but it is difficult. My camera has almost no manual settings—which is great for me in most normal point-and-shoot situations, but SOMEtimes you just want to go manual and get that into-the-light shot. This was the best I could do.
This one required a little Photoshopping before you could even see the brackets, much less the latillas. I just colored them in enough so you could get the impression of what you see in real life. The screens don’t really keep the sun out, but do cut the glare during the brightest part of the day.
