August 8, 2008—More finishing touches on auspicious 8-8-08
Here is Jim’s dressing room door and in the distance, Jim’s office door, with door knobs installed.

This will be our phone-charging and mail station. The electricians have finished trimming out our plug bank and phone jacks.

When the cabinet makers come back for their final work, they will install a counter here with two shelves above it. Below the counter will be our shredder and we will each get a shelf for mail. My hope is that this space will help contain the paper clutter that normally coagulates in the kitchen.

Here is the alarm control by our back door. The electricians haven’t quite gotten to this point yet. They got side-tracked by pulling phone wires.
Here is a better shot of the walkway from the back door to the carport. There will be a little fence across the front of it to keep it from looking like the front door.
We intend to make a plant bed along this bare wall and plant a Meyer lemon tree, a Mexican lime and some other plants. We are getting close to doing the final grading and will be digging up this area to install the plant bed soon.
Looking from the family room toward the front gate you can see the bars of shade on the wall.
That is because this section of the roof will be left open to use as an arbor for vines. I am not sure what I will plant here, possibly grapes or a climbing rose or maybe bougainvillea. Kai has installed the extra rafters for the arbor which is why there are so many bars in the shadow.

Here is a better photo of the woodpile screen. We brought up all the left-over lumber from the arbor and have stacked it on top of the woodpile and tarped it.

Those blue tarps are effective but not very attractive. I think they have tan ones at the local hardware and maybe will invest in one so I don’t have to look at the blue one forever!

We need to wait until the rains start to plant something along the screen. The dirt is so dry and cracked now, that even if we dig a good hole, the plant just struggles until the ground softens up with the rain.
