August 15, 2007—Kai starts installing trim

If you look carefully at this photo, you will notice that the laundry closet and kitchen window now have trim. All the trim needs to be put in before the painters can start.

Also, in the corner, you can see our little fridge that we bought for the party. It turned out that we really didn’t need it, but I think it will come in handy in the future. Maybe I can use it in my office, to keep cold drinks.

What does not show in this picture is that we completed negotiations with our contractor, Janver Holly, on the final numbers for the house contract. We will sign it this week and start construction on Monday! I am so excited!

Back in the cottage bedroom, I am working on another iteration of the bedroom colors. They look very pastel-y in this picture, but in real life the colors are more subtle.

I had discussed the problem with my color consultant at the party and his suggestion is that both colors need to be about the same value. I think I arrived at that here and they look fairly good, but I still want Jim to render judgment.

In the barn, my assistant had taken down all the decorations and was busy sanding and sealing the beams.

Meet General Debris. He is a sculpture I had commissioned by Nemo Gould. He arrived for the party and will now be a permanent fixture at our place. Eventually, he will be mounted right in front of the house, next to our courtyard gate.

General Debris is completely fabricated from recycled aluminum objects and old motors. When he is finally mounted, he will be on a motion detector so that anyone approaching the courtyard gate will cause him to move.

He also lights up at night with glowing red eyes and mouth and the round thing on his chest is a gauge which also glows. He has two “guns” made from old drill housings, but we have taken them away for now because we don’t want them to “walk away” on their own while the construction is going on.

Nemo is an amazing artist and for sheer amusement value, I highly recommend a visit to his website: nemomatic.com

I should note, the General’s “manly appendage” was replaced for display at our place. The original one (which Nemo gave me custody of) was based on quite a large aluminum salt shaker, with a couple of aluminum syrup pitchers attached for verisimilitude. It is quite impressive, but not for general viewing at this time. The one on display is an old drill chuck, less impressive but still interesting.

Back in the guest cottage, the tile for the vanity back-splash is complete. I am dubious about the two different colors of tile—the trim differs from the body tile—but I don’t think I would have liked my solution of the buff-colored trim any better, so the point is moot. I plan to have the ceiling painted buff and the walls painted white. Maybe with four colors of white—the paint, the tile, the tile trim and the bathroom appliances, not to mention the white grout—it will all look like a decorating decision.
