November 14, 2007—The great “ear” debate begins

By late afternoon, Thomas had the guest bath and foyer framed in. I guess he took what I said earlier to heart.

Here is a closer look at the sheer by the living room exterior door. It looks like it got walked on quite a bit before it was installed.

Finally, here is our front door—or at least the hole where it will be installed.

Here I am looking through the dining room into the living room and beyond to the guest wing. You can see that they did complete the rafters and sheathing on the living room. On the left of this shot, you can see the legs of the scaffolding. It is now trapped in the room and will need to be dismantled in order to move it elsewhere. This makes me realize how much of a pain in the butt it is going to be to paint these rooms. |

This shot is looking toward the master bath from the laundry room. We still haven’t gotten our shower floor yet, but I think it will be poured the week after Thanksgiving.

Here is the forklift, parked for the night.

This shot might give a better idea of the ear debate. The wall which will be across the front of the courtyard extends from the wing on the left to the wing on the right with a gate into the courtyard. The height of this wall is currently set to be even with the top of the parapet of the left-hand wing. I am concerned that it will make the house look too fortress-like. We can only lop off about 9" of the wall before we open up a huge can of design worms, but Abe Shameson, our new project manager from Todd’s office, came up with a great fix. His idea is to lower the wall to the top of the walkway roof and add a smaller version of the roof on the front of the wall. This will change the look of the house somewhat and we are still thinking about it, but it is a definite possibility. |

Our stalwart porta-pottie found a friend! Actually, our neighbors had porta-potties over the weekend and when the driver came to pick them up, he had too many for his truck. He asked if he could leave one—cleaned—with us, and of course we said yes. I suppose it will be gone next week, but it has been kind of nice having two. |
