October 31, 2007—Halloween at the site

This morning I arrived at the site about 7:40 am in a dense fog. Everything was very ghostly—appropriate for Halloween. The crew was at work putting rafters on the east wing of the house.

The grading the previous Sunday cleared away the piles of dirt that were to the west of the house, so I could now get a good view of the living room and dining room from the outside.

About 1pm, the sun came out. The temperature suddenly shot up 10 degrees, from 63 to 75 and I had to take off my fleece vest. As you can see, the sky is blue as can be. Thomas, the framing chief, was back from his hunting trip to take charge of the crew. (He is the one wearing the white hat.) I understand from Kai, that they will work on rafters for a while before they finish framing the guest room and library. |

My own private redwood grove . . .thanks to Costco! These trees will be planted on the knoll you can see behind them in the photo, to block the view from our neighbors up the hill.

The electricians had been in the barn putting in the lights on the second floor. These fixtures I bought at Ikea. You only see the stripes when the lights are on.

These fixtures go down the middle of the ceiling and I think they are very handsome. The electrician found them as a substitute for some ridiculously expensive fixtures. They have little perforations which the light shines through.

Here are the sink and toilet for the barn bathroom. While looking at sinks on the internet, I came across all our old friends from gas station bathrooms. You don’t realize how familiar you are with wall-hung commercial sinks until you start looking at them—all the old favorites from those trips to the restroom.

Abe, the new project manager from Todd Jersey Architecture came about 1pm, then Jerry, my color consultant came at 3, so I had a busy afternoon. Once everyone left, I took these pictures. The fog was coming in—our traditional fog that rolls in from the ocean—and our recent hard rain has started everything greening up early. This picture of the house, taken from the barn balcony, shows all of that. |

Here is the rock that that was put in in the dark on Sunday night by the grading team. Hopefully, it will keep us from being swallowed by mud when it starts to rain.

Here is the hall in the master wing, taken looking in from the back door by the carport.

From in front of the master bathroom, here we are looking the opposite direction as the previous shot, toward the carport door. How small this hall looks! I am sure it will look even smaller until it is painted, when it will assume a normal hall size. |
