January 27, 2008—Cottage decor comes together

I took these photos on Sunday. Jim and I had a date! We went out to dinner and dancing and stayed overnight at the cottage. The occasion was a band we like playing in the area, and we had also planned to pick up the coffee table for the cottage living room and get it put together the next day.

Here are the nightstands I put together on Friday and neglected to photograph. They are brown-painted metal, which somehow legitimizes the ugly trundle bedsteads.

We bought a great photograph of a rusty truck—which is out being framed—for this room. With that up and some cream colored duvet covers, it will start to look very nice.

The living room really came together with the new coffee table in place. It is from the same group as the nightstands, but you can see the style better here than the photo of the bedroom. The thing on top is a wrought iron basket I got a few years ago as a gift. It has been in storage awaiting a home, and as soon as I set it down on the new coffee table, I knew it had found one.

We moved the couch to the opposite wall from where it was before and the whole room seems larger. There is also a great piece of art for the wall above the couch, but I am afraid to put a nail in the wall and will have to ask Kai to do it for me.

Here is a view of the new dining room table I put together on Friday. It is a great table, very sturdy and well-made—also, quite heavy. (I hope it isn’t made out of poached teak.)

The surface is adzed—rather than smooth—and is a little higher than regular table height. I was concerned that it isn’t modern enough to go with the rest of the furniture, but Jim says to not second guess myself. I am not sure I trust his decorating esthetic, but what’s done is done and I like the table a lot.

Now, all we need is the media console and a tv to go with it. (And a console table, a boot tray, some more art, some new shelves in the kitchen, a new kitchen island, etc., etc., etc.)
