May 2, 2008—The sheet rock is complete, on to mud!

After everyone left this afternoon, I went around and took some photos of the rooms cleaned and ready for tape and mud.

The floors get swept and then the red paper is put down to protect the floors during the mud process. We are getting a finish which Janver calls “country smooth wall finish.” The whole wall is covered with sheet rock mud and troweled smooth. There are a few skips here and there and the whole look is as close to interior plaster as you can get without actually paying for interior plaster.

Looking toward the family room, you can see the dust from the drywall installation still on that floor. The crew will finish the clean-up and paper installation on Monday and then get on with taping.
I love this picture, because it really simulates how the house will look when it is done. The floors won’t be this red, but they will be a reddish-brown, and we will have a burgundy colored Afghan carpet in the living room. Of course, we will have some furniture too, but this looks more like it will in the end than any other photo so far, so I am starting to get excited.

After talking to Tom Riggs and Kai, I think we are pretty set on a faux chimney. The mantle is still up for grabs.

I love the way the arches look with the soft corners. I am still thinking of faux painting a striped border around them, but it will depend on how much energy I have when the time comes. For sure, it won’t get done after we move in—that is always a pipedream, at least in my case.

Here is one last picture of the foyer into the living room. Next week, it should look very different in here.
