August 13, 2008—My birthday at the site
The significance of this photo is that the disposal has been installed. We have put disposals in both kitchen sinks because we had a bunch of gift certificates to Home Depot and needed to spend them. (For most supplies we tend to patronize our locally-owned hardware/lumberyard which is quite competitive with HD, is closer and has real people who can help you.)
The filters have been installed in the range hood fan. All we need now are light bulbs, which do not come with it.
Kai always likes to fly his flag from the back of his truck when it is parked. Today, he had it parked in back of the dining room so his tools would be near by.
The final post for the courtyard has had its coats of sealer applied and is waiting to be installed.
I tried to take a photo of the fans running, but the camera is too quick and stops the motion pretty much.
Kai had laid out all the closet hardware and door stops in one of the kitchen drawers for safekeeping.
This is the guest room hallway with the guest bath door on the left and the tiny linen closet at the end.

My assistant has been digging up the end of the courtyard for our main planting bed. He hit rock almost right away and so Kai is going to lend us a little electric jackhammer to loosen it up. This bed is currently about a foot deep.

We are doing this digging to save money when the final grading is done, but also because we need to have the beds defined so that the surfacing goes in the right places.

On the right you can see the huge pile of dirt he has dug up already. In the middle, there is a little set-up of a sawhorse with two boards leaning against it. This is to represent the fountain. I am trying to get a sense of how much room it will take up. I have my eye on one with a pond which is 54" in diameter. Would that take up too much room?

Here is my ersatz fountain again from the front gate. I had almost decided not to have the fountain in the middle of the courtyard until I realized that a stranger walking in would be tempted to go across the courtyard to the family room French door, instead of going to the right to the front door.

I want the fountain there to block the view of the family room door and make it less of a direct path.
