May 21, 23 & 24, 2008—A week’s worth of progress
If you look closely at this picture, you can see the sample of the ceiling color near the window. We had two final colors to chose from and picked the darker one. It looks so gray in the chip, but much warmer in the sample. We will see.
We put up the absolute final wall color, and guess what? We didn’t like it. Here you see it in the middle with two lighter choices . We are going to use other color on the left. It is very much like the cottage buff color, except it does not have the tinge of gray of the one in the cottage.
We are going to paint the ceiling in our bedroom blue, so the primer here is a blue-gray—actually kind of nice on its own.
Here is the probable back hall color. It is a combo of the main house wall color and one of the rejected ceiling colors to lighten it up.

May 23, 2008

I arrived at the site to find two sample blues on the master bedroom ceiling—which were rejected as too light. I have picked out some new colors and will pick up samples next week.

We met with the tile designer and I laid out all the tile in the bathroom. We are going with the tile on the left, which looks like a paver, but is actually porcelain. The smaller ones above it will be used in a decorative boarder in the shower room. The rest of the tile will be shiny white.

The ceiling in the kitchen/family room is painted and the paper has been removed from the beams. Kai is trying to figure out how to attach the corbels to the beams while making them look like they are attached to the wall.

There was quite a bit of discussion about this before, but hopefully, we will figure out a system that looks good and holds them firmly on too.

We decided to use a detail from the head trim (the board which will go across the top of the windows and doors) which is step-notched, similar to the steps on the arches and the corbels.

Here is the mantle sitting on sawhorses in preparation for notching.

You can see the steps in the ends of the corbels in this photo.

Ginger, who doesn’t like to be further than 20' away from Kai, does her dead dog imitation by the corbels waiting for installation.

All notched and the knot in the middle is centered too.
Here is how it looks close up. Of course it will all be sanded down so it looks nice.
A semi-profile view with notches.
