October 3, 2007—Visiting the new slab

First thing Wednesday morning, I arrived at the site and took these shots of the slab as the crew was removing forms.

In the foreground you see one of the column bases with the form removed. I have some concerns about these because they were supposed to have had the forms removed and been hard troweled to make the edges more crisp and get rid of the form marks. Somehow this got neglected in the intense work during the pour.

The color of the concrete is just beautiful. I like it so much.

I pushed back a little of the straw so I could take a picture of the real slab.
Hear you see the whole thing with the straw in the morning light.
I was very impressed with the fact that the crew took the time to remove the nails from all the form stakes as they stacked them up and flatten all the nails on the wood that they were discarding. This kind of care makes the job so much safer and also allows for recycling of materials.
